Forgotten chairs get spotlight in new Estero exhibit

miromar design center

Elegant, custom lighting can be the absolute linchpin on which your interior design rests. The Pacific Design Center, or PDC, is a 1,600,000-square-foot (150,000 m2) multi-use facility for the design community in West Hollywood, California. One of the buildings is often described as the Blue Whale because of its large size relative to surrounding buildings and its brilliant blue glass cladding. “Furniture Factory Outlet brings a unique direct-from-manufacturer experience to Southwest Florida,” said Phil Ison, owner of the new home furnishings store. Hearst Television participates in various affiliate marketing programs, which means we may get paid commissions on editorially chosen products purchased through our links to retailer sites.

Floor Plans for Office Planning

interior design layout

Small-space dwellers who need a WFH setup needn’t work in their bed all day (though, hey, we’re not judging). With the right amount of spatial finagling, you can fit a small desk into a studio apartment. Ferrer was lucky enough to have a preexisting nook, but you can achieve the same with a narrow desk, small lamp, and overhead shelving for stashing away books or office supplies. Bonus points for a striking accent wall, which, in the case of Ferrer’s apartment, makes this small office feel like a chic den. Built to accommodate friends and college-age family members back for summer visits, this project quickly turned into the homeowners favorite place to hang on the property. With a knack for selecting small space kitchen appliances, furnishings and color schemes that maximize a sense of airiness, with this project we proved that bigger isn't always better.

Simple Steps to Achieve the Best Furniture Layout

She’s different and loves to embrace that through her work. The founder of Reath Design stands out because of the type of interior design work she creates. She works alongside screenwriters and showrunners to help create the sets for television shows.

Step 4: Finalize Your Layout and Present With Floor Plans

If you have hunted for an apartment solo in a pricy metropolitan area like New York, San Francisco, or Miami, you’ll doubtlessly be inured to some all-too-familiar trade-offs. Sign a lease for a place with prewar details and fantastic light? Prepare to live off of peanut butter sandwiches for the next three years. Find a spot that’s just two blocks from the subway and allows for you to pay off that journalism degree?

One caveat; there's a slightly limited selection of botanicals. A bigger choice, including taller varieties such as bamboo, would be good, to help create the garden of your dreams. There is a huge choice of garden features that are easy to add and subtract, including outdoor fireplaces, parasols, sheds and summerhouses. There's no awkwardness either if you want to move them around to see how they look in different parts of the garden. If you're thinking about investing in new flooring, Carpetright's flooring visualiser will help you envision what your room will look like with carpet, vinyl, wood or laminate flooring. Simply take a photo of your chosen room (or select a sample room) and upload it onto the visualiser.

Experimenting with different combinations to create a different look is a breeze; simply click on the area and select a different colour or finish – and there are lots to choose from. Multiple kitchen appliances to indicate freezer, the cooking stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher. I’ll have specific advice on how to deal with large and small rooms in future posts, but in the meantime I hope you find the above tips useful. And if you want more ideas on how to improve your home without spending any money, take a look at this post from last year.

It can have a huge impact, making spaces feel cosier and much more inviting – and, contrary to many people’s assumptions, it often makes rooms appear larger rather than smaller. Even in very compact rooms, you’ll probably find there’s scope to move an easy chair or side table in from the wall. When you have a clear idea of this you can start working out how to incorporate everything you need into the space you have, and identify any essentials that are lacking. This is particularly important in large, open-plan areas, which work best when broken up into defined ‘zones’, but even smaller rooms are likely to have multiple functions to fulfil.

While its interior decorating function is an excellent feature, Cory says the strength of this tool lies in its functionality as a floor planner. Then, once the floor plan is completed, you can switch view and decorate the space in 3D mode. Selecting the right furniture is an essential part of creating a California interior. Overall, your furniture should reflect the laid-back and comfortable lifestyle of the coast. For example, plush armchairs and deep-seated sectional sofas could be just what your space needs.

Windows, skylights and glass doors are a great way to add natural light, so make sure you account for them in your floor plan. Don’t forget to include artificial lights, such as lamps or overhead fixtures, in your floor plan. Consider the placement of light switches and outlets before placing and arranging your furniture. Full-concept Exteriors Landscapes Gardens

garden design and landscaping

Another way to define form is thinking of a plant when it’s in leaf (the leaves emphasize its depth). At Garden Designs & Landscapes (Los Angeles landscape), we love what we do. We are a team of passionate people with immense knowledge and expertise in designing and landscaping space.

Services

garden design and landscaping

We are a boutique-sized construction company, and we are deeply committed to our ongoing projects. We provide complimentary site visits to personally assess the site, with the aim of minimizing unexpected challenges. It’s important to clarify that this does not encompass free landscape consultations. Additionally, using a drip irrigation system helps to conserve water, which is especially important in drought-prone areas. The slow and steady application of water provided by drip irrigation reduces water waste due to runoff and evaporation, making it an environmentally sustainable irrigation option.

Service Areas

A sliver of backyard space is transformed into a multifunctional outdoor living area. Trellises and arbors provide structure, while vining or trailing plants add a living component. Vines can be used as privacy screening or to hide an unsightly fence or wall, while trailing plants can be displayed in hanging baskets and window boxes. Choose plants that are appropriate for the light and soil conditions. Plant trees and shrubs for privacy and shade, and add perennials, groundcovers, and annuals for color.

To see how Laura Morton works as a transformational landscape designer—a “matchmaker” between nature’s power and the human yearning for order and beauty—explore her project galleries. Soil amendment is rarely necessary when planting plants because most soils naturally contain sufficient nutrients and minerals to support plant growth. Additionally, excessive soil amendment can disrupt the soil’s natural balance, causing issues such as nutrient imbalances and drainage problems.

At Artscape Gardens, we design custom landscaping projects with meticulous attention to detail. Request a site walk today to start creating your dream outdoor space. Also see our Gallery page for stunning examples of our work, like this landscaping plan for a San Marino residence. Although our initial focus was on drought-tolerant lawn to garden conversions, today Artscape Gardens offers design-build solutions at any scale. Whether you need a small backyard makeover or a complete property transformation, we have the expertise and experience to bring your vision to life.

How much does it cost to get a landscape design?

In summary, while drought-tolerant plants are designed to be water-efficient, they still require sufficient moisture to look their best and thrive. Having a design is not always essential when it comes to landscaping. For instance, if the landscape regions are already established, it is possible to have a detailed discussion about the installation items during a preliminary site walk. This can help to create an estimate that is based on the specific needs of the site. Additionally, the mass of individual plants within a bed should also align with the overall planting scheme. Each plant contributes to the visual weight and balance of the landscape, so their sizes, shapes, and forms should work harmoniously together.

Even a small urban yard can be transformed into an inviting space where you can maximize enjoyment of your time outdoors. Here are some basic backyard design principles, along with design ideas to get you started. You can always hire a landscape designer or architect to help your outdoor space realize its potential. Artist/designer Laura Morton creates sumptuous, award-winning outdoor spaces that transcend daily life. She takes a holistic approach to landscape design, considering all aspects of sustainability without compromising ambiance or style.

Well-designed rain gardens are not only good for the earth, but good-looking as well. Lighten up a shady garden with a well-thought-out design and carefully selected plants. From urban gardens to expansive estates, browse hundreds of inspiring landscapes. Add or renovate pathways in your yard for function and beauty. Create a colorful garden by learning the basics of color theory & design.

There may be instances where properties are located outside our current service area or where the scope does not align with our primary focus. A clear and carefully thought through landscape design is a great first step prior to breaking ground on installation. The national average cost for a landscape design varies from $2,600 to $4,500 with some landscape architects charging upwards $11,000 for residential projects. Directional lines can be quite effective in achieving specific results in the garden. For example, straight lines evoke formality, precisely directing the eye to focal points.

Similarly, hardscape materials like stones, bricks, or wood also possess texture, with rough or smooth surfaces adding moments of contrast or repetition. Home Outside offers upgraded services from phone/video consultations with professional landscape designers to complete designs done remotely. The consultative fee for a one-hour on-site visit is $300 which will be applied as a full credit towards the cost of a design or installation.

Overall, at AG, we are committed to providing our clients with the highest quality landscaping services possible. While we may not provide maintenance services directly, we are always available to offer advice and recommendations to help our clients maintain the beauty and functionality of their outdoor space. Our company was established in 2015 with a mission to help Los Angeles-based homeowners transform their properties into beautiful, drought-tolerant oases. We also cover a wide range of hardscape items, including walls, concrete, fences, and more.

Choose a bistro set or love seat for a smaller space rather than a full-sized dining ensemble or couch sectional. Stepping stones may be more suitable for a pathway than a full-sized sidewalk. If you have a tiny yard, you may not have room for a pond, but you can still add a water feature such as a birdbath or tabletop fountain. Allow enough room for plants to reach their mature size and use dwarf varieties for smaller areas. In design, mass refers to the visual size of an object or group of objects, such as a planting bed, house, patio, or individual plants. These voids (often called negative space) have their own visual mass and play a key role in balancing and unifying the landscape.

In addition, we choose plants and materials that are appropriate for the local climate and soil conditions, ensuring that the landscape will thrive for years to come. Ultimately, working with a quality landscape designer can save time, money, and stress, while creating an outdoor space that enhances the beauty and functionality of your home. At AG, we take pride in providing top-notch landscaping design and installation services to our clients. While we are happy to recommend gardener referrals to our clients, it is worth noting that our area of focus is not in maintenance. Instead, we are dedicated to providing high-quality services that focus on creating beautiful and functional outdoor spaces. A 2D architectural grade landscape design is often considered superior to a 3D rendering because it provides a clearer and more precise representation of the landscape design.

Select varieties that bloom at different times and have colored foliage, bark, or berries for multi-seasonal interest. Include native plants that support wildlife and beneficial insects. Creating separate areas for different functions will make a backyard feel larger.

Updating your home’s landscaping is a great way to increase the value of your property and create outdoor spaces for relaxing and entertaining. Use the information below to start determining what you want in your new landscape. You don’t need a big backyard to make substantial improvements.

Design tokens for dummies What are design tokens? What role do by Louis Chenais UX Collective

design token

If you aren’t doing it yet, you should start immediately working with specified increments for defining your grid, spacings, sizings, etc. I like to establish a few global foundational colors such as a background, foreground, and surface colors. Imagine you are painting your huge house with your partner and kids. You agreed that you will use a light blue for any room that should have a relaxing vibe. They reference a universal all-might number that can be later reused in half of your tokens. They are human-friendly names, masking horrifying values, hard to memorize.

Types

design token

Variables take the mystery out of obscure values but they don’t bridge the gap between naming and use. But the sad truth is that, at the moment, many other “shortcuts” are not possible with Figma alone. Everything started with Salesforce’s Design System in 2014, where Jina Anne coined the term. For more on how our spacing system, and how to use space in your designs, see our spacing foundation.

Join us for Framework by Figma: Our global design systems event

There are dedicated color tokens for text, links, icons, backgrounds, borders, blankets, charts, and skeleton loaders. Choose tokens based on meaning where applicable, not specific values. While the buzz around NFTs might have seemingly quietened down alongside volatility and crashes in the crypto market, Robert Alice reminds us of the thriving art scene within its cultural sphere. On NFTs, edited by the London-based artist and published by Taschen, is the largest art historical survey on blockchain-based art to date. We’re bringing together the design systems community on April 16 to share new features, best practices, and a peek into what’s coming next.

What Are Design Tokens?

At the beginning of the project, he would only get developers involved when he had something to show them. He quickly realized that the product design team could be more effective if developers provided their input right from the beginning. Therefore, he started including developers in launch meetings, enhancing collaboration. Whether you’re involved in UX design or UI design, certain design tools can help you make better decisions and collaborate more effectively with your colleagues. It’s also easier to collaborate when you have a single source of truth to guide decisions at every stage of the design process. Companies all over the world use design systems to create a shared design language, making it easier to design at scale and avoid redundancy.

They keep your brand's visual style consistent and easy to manage. It is memorable and easily understood by non-designers, but it is tough to memorize 50+ crazy names. They’ll demystify design tokens and give you real-world strategies to start building them into your design systems practice.

design token

You would be better off envisioning a few screens first and later deriving the ideal token styles and structure from them. A neutral style could be created by using one of the brand’s neutral looking font faces, neutral greyscale colors and average metrics (margins, paddings, elevation, borders, shadows, roundness, …). Design tokens can be exported in various formats, such as JSON or YAML, and integrated into development workflows and tools.

A guide to design tokens

Standalone design tokens are now available for teams who want to use IDS styles in their solutions but can’t use the IDS components. These design tokens represent foundational design language styles, like colors and font sizes, and are currently powering our recently released Web Components. Design tokens make it easier for designers and developers to apply the right values in the right scenarios.

A root element can also be provided so that CSS custom properties are scoped to that root. The type assertion informs what types the token can be set to (and what type will be retrieved), and the name parameter will serve as the CSS Custom Property name (more on that later). The FAST Design Token implementation is designed to provide first-class support for Design Tokens and make setting, getting, and using Design Tokens simple.

Everything You Need to Know About Design Tokens

In the case when a DesignToken is assigned a derived value, the CSS custom property will also be emitted when any dependent tokens change. Whenever engineers make changes to the repository, they automatically sync to UXPin, notifying designers of the update. Merge comes with version control, allowing designers to switch to an earlier version–helpful for updating older projects. As digital products get more complex, designers and engineers must find solutions to integrate workflows–a problem UXPin has solved with our revolutionary Merge technology.

The best thing I did while trying to define a naming convention while running generation tests through Supernova was to open up the conversation to developers almost daily. Together, we looked at how verbose some of our variable names had become and prioritized them for findability in Figma and Supernova’s documentation. The more groups you create and try to break things down and avoid duplication, the more complexity you’ll add to the final tokens. This complexity might not be apparent while building, but it will become so when you add a new theme that won’t be quite the same as others. Now you have some good fundamental knowledge of how to set up your “Design Token System”.

Publishing is the foundation of art history, and the blockchain while it will always be the primary source, is limited as just an economic ledger. It tells you not just who (pseudonymously), but what, at what time (down to the second), and at what price (down to the smaller unit of account). But in doing so all the important cultural and socio-political history, the context that gives art its soul — this is where books come in. Understand the basics of design systems, what they are, how they work, and how they can change the way you design. The addition of these two new areas to bind variables rounds out our token offering and marks their transition from beta to general availability.

Atomic design is a methodology for creating design systems developed by Brad Frost. It breaks down user interfaces into smaller, reusable components called atoms, molecules, organisms, templates, and pages (in ascending order of complexity). Atoms are the basic building blocks like buttons, input fields, icons, etc.

The best way to create a design token is to use a tool such as Theo or Figma Tokens Studio. You’ll be able to create your own token names and store custom design decisions, saving your product design team an untold number of hours. ABB’s new design system was a major success, due in part to the use of platform-agnostic design tokens to save key design decisions. Sial also notes that the product team’s focus on documentation makes it possible for team members to see each component’s entire life cycle, increasing transparency. Once you get started with design tokens, make sure you’re prioritizing functionality instead of spending the bulk of your time worrying about creating just the right token name. You may also want to ask your leadership team for additional resources to ensure you have exactly what you need to create a functional design system.

You might have asked yourself up there why I didn’t define the base text size for body as 1 reminstead of 16 px. I’m a fan of integers and getting a 14 px font size from a multiple of 1 rem is simply nasty. The @microsoft/fast-components have extensive support for predefined design tokens. See configuring styles for details on adjusting or using the existing tokens, or read on to create your own.

The Chilpancingo metro stop is four blocks away, a seven-minute walk, and makes moving about the city much easier. Destinations like the Zona Rosa are 15 minutes away by metro (a 25-minute walk), while downtown (home to sights like the Museo de Bellas Artes) is 30 minutes away by metro. Mexico City International Airport is a 30- to 40-minute drive from the hotel depending on traffic.

It's a bit quirky, but it's beautiful and warm, and has the feeling of staying in a friend's home rather than a hotel. Guests enter from the tree-lined street into the cozy lobby with a small front desk at the back. There is vibrant contemporary Mexican artwork throughout, and a red glass chandelier hangs from the ceiling. One of the hotel's best features is its furnished courtyard with a jacaranda tree, many other plants and flowers, and fountains.

Mexico City’s number one B&B by providing its guests with genuine hospitality and personal service not found in standard accommodations.

Breakfast is included in room rates and is served in the courtyard each morning. It consists of coffee, tea, juice, pastries, fruit, cereal, and a Mexican specialty that changes each day. Free wine and beer are served in the courtyard in the evening. A computer and printer are set up in the Living Room for guests to use, and the player piano is available for entertainment. Children must be older than 8 years of age to stay here and guests should know that a dog resides in the house (guests are not allowed to bring pets). In a small property like this, service makes a major difference, and the staff is exceedingly accommodating and helpful.

We enjoyed the common areas and nightly happy hour that encouraged interacting with other guests. The staff was always available to help with all requests. Small, boutiquey and personal vibe rather than feeling like a hotel. Breakfast was wonderful every morning in the beautiful courtyard with the amazing tree. The breakfast was lovely and Victor took great pride in introducing the guests to the dishes of Mexico.

The Red Tree House is not just a hotel--it is an experience. Our room was comfortable, quiet and spacious, and the location is excellent. In our relatively short stay, we met lots of interesting and lovely people, mostly retirees from the US. We have traveled extensively throughout the world (especially in Latin America), the RTH is probably our favorite. The Red Tree House is housed in a residence built in the 1930s that has reputedly hosted artists and writers over the years.

Some guests are on a budget, but others choose to stay at Mexico City’s Red Tree House for the great neighborhood and the friendly staff and atmosphere. Staff are wonderful hosts - many thanks to Alejandro and Victor for their kindness and humor. Breakfasts are delicious, beds comfortable, atmosphere is warming and cozy.

Lafayette is named after a landmark across the street, Edificio Lafayette, and a large photograph of it hangs in the dining area. The room has a glass-enclosed living room overlooking the tree-filled courtyard. Jacaranda is bright and colorful with orange and white bed coverings, red doors, and gold drapes. The large Penthouse is equally colorful, with a vivid orange bed covering, red rug, yellow chairs, and purple runners on the dresser and desk. The Treehouse, on the rooftop with its own terrace, is among the most popular rooms, although it is tiny.

I loved all the artwork in the hotel and particularly enjoyed the happy hour, getting to know a few of the other guests. Each of the contemporary rooms are individually decorated and have names such as Lafayette, Milagritos, and Amigos. Furniture and bold artwork are modern and chic, and rooms have attractive wood or stone-tiled floors and on-trend wall colors like slate gray and mustard yellow. Rooms range in size and style, but all have flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and mini-fridges. Some rooms, like the Penthouse and Lafayette, also have full kitchens and balconies. While all rooms also have ceiling fans, none are air-conditioned.

Vote Count: Mike Johnson Elected House Speaker After Three-Week Vacancy The New York Times

house of representatives speaker

CNN reported that Mr. Trump also called Representative Andy Biggs, who switched from voting against Mr. McCarthy to voting “present” on the 15th round. Even by the heated standards of the tensions that flared among House Republicans during their four-day push to elect a speaker, what happened on the House floor around 11 p.m. The prolonged election prompted tension and uncertainty in the Capitol, where lawmakers in both parties had grown impatient and bored awaiting the outcome of a high-stakes struggle that seemed at once monumental and absurd. “The motion to vacate is accountability,” he added, referring to the measure allowing a snap vote to remove the speaker. Friday night, Mr. McCarthy remained one vote short of what he needed to seal the deal.

California holds the key to GOP power in the House. McCarthy’s retirement makes everything harder

Johnson was sworn in as the 56th House speaker soon after winning the vote and delivering a speech to lawmakers in the House chamber. "We're going to dispense with all the usual ceremonies and celebrations that traditionally follow a new speakership because we have no time for either one," Johnson said. "The American people's business is too urgent in this moment. The hour is late. The crisis is great." Johnson, a little-known lawmaker who is now second in line for the presidency, attracted the support of all 220 Republican members in attendance, surpassing the 215-vote total that was required to win.

With Johnson, Republicans are rallying behind one of the staunchest religious conservatives in the House.

The vote put him second in line to the presidency, capping an extraordinary period of twists and turns on Capitol Hill. It marked a victory for the far right that has become a dominant force in the Republican Party, which rose up this month to effectively dictate the removal of an establishment speaker and the installation of an arch-conservative replacement. Exhausted from the feuding, which unleashed a barrage of recriminations and violent threats against lawmakers, both the right wing and mainstream Republicans finally united to elect Mr. Johnson, 51, in a 220-to-209 vote. But the speech infuriated Mr. Trump, and Mr. McCarthy quickly worked to get back in the former president’s good graces, traveling to his Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago, three weeks later to meet with him. But after former President Donald J. Trump placed phone calls to a group of key holdouts, and a frenzied round of haggling on the House floor, Mr. McCarthy was broadly grinning again. Representative Chip Roy of Texas started out as an enthusiastic supporter of Mr. Trump’s claims of a stolen election but gradually grew alarmed about the push to invalidate the results and ultimately opposed Mr. Trump’s bid to get Congress to overturn them on Jan. 6, 2021.

Majority Leader

As set out under the Constitution, the session will begin at noon Jan. 3, with all the lawmakers seated on the House floor and members from both parties joining in the vote for speaker. Republican U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy is set to face a case of deja vu come Tuesday. The political future of the 57-year-old will once again be at stake as GOP lawmakers decide whether he should be elected as House speaker.

But even more than his election denialism, Mr. Johnson’s political career has been defined by his religious views. “The slates of electors were produced by a clearly unconstitutional process, period,” he said. In December 2020, Mr. Johnson collected signatures for a legal brief in support of a Texas lawsuit, rooted in baseless claims of widespread election irregularities, that tried to throw out the results in four battleground states won by Joseph R. Biden Jr. A social conservative, Mr. Johnson played a leading role in recruiting House Republicans to sign a legal brief supporting a lawsuit seeking to overturn the results. “This affirms the path that we took,” Representative Bob Good of Virginia, one of the eight Republicans who voted to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, tells reporters. “We went through a lot to get here, but we are ready to govern and that will begin right away,” Johnson says in his first news conference as speaker.

Officers and Organizations

The dissidents praised the protracted debate that spotlighted their party’s rifts, made it impossible for legislative business to be conducted and threatened the timely issuance of paychecks on Capitol Hill. Left unmentioned was that many of the same rebels who helped lead the effort in Congress to overturn the 2020 election, giving rise to the assault that day, were also among the final holdouts working to block Mr. McCarthy’s ascent. Representative Victoria Spartz of Indiana, who had voted “present” in previous ballots, also voted for Mr. McCarthy in the 12th vote. A photographer was among those arrested during clashes between protesters and law enforcement on the University of Texas at Austin campus on Wednesday.

Republicans had cast aside two previous winners of their closed-door nominating process — Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio — before settling on Mr. Emmer. Pressed by reporters on Tuesday night about his efforts to overturn the election, Mr. Johnson smiled and shook his head, saying, “next question,” as Republicans beside him booed. House Republicans chose and then quickly repudiated yet another of their nominees for speaker on Tuesday and rushed to name a fourth, pressing to put an end to a remarkable three-week-long deadlock that has left Congress leaderless and paralyzed.

Biden and McCarthy will have to find compromise come January, when the GOP takes control of the House of Representatives and the Bakersfield Republican is expected to secure the Speaker’s gavel. California Rep. Kevin McCarthy has no business in Congress’ highest office or the presidential line of succession. Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi celebrates a $400 million investment from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for the Golden Gate Bridge to bolster its resiliency to earthquakes with Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Special Advisor to the President Mitch Landrieu and local leaders. The Bridge Investment Program from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law delivers $12.5 billion to build, repair and replace key bridges across the country. Speaker Emerita Pelosi celebrated with staff in the Speaker’s Lobby after the passage of the Affordable Care Act in the House of Representatives.

Others railed against Mr. Emmer’s vote in favor of a stopgap spending bill put forward by Mr. McCarthy, the speaker at the time, to avert a government shutdown. Still others said he was insufficiently loyal to Mr. Trump, because he voted to certify the results of the 2020 election won by President Biden. Historically, there have been several controversial elections to the speakership, such as the contest of 1839. In that case, even though the 26th United States Congress convened on December 2, the House could not begin the speakership election until December 14 because of an election dispute in New Jersey known as the "Broad Seal War". Two rival delegations, one Whig and the other Democrat, had been certified as elected by different branches of the New Jersey government.

Mr. Johnson has opposed continued funding for the war in Ukraine, which has emerged as a bitter fault line in the G.O.P. and in the spending battles that he will have to navigate in the coming days. Evoking his evangelical Christian faith, Mr. Johnson repeatedly referred to scripture in his speech from the House floor. They also were unhappy that he had suggested in an interview on Fox News that the House committee investigating the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, had the political aim of damaging Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. The practice of earmarking — where a single lawmaker can use a sliver of the sprawling government budget to send money to a specific project in his or her state — has been both embraced and reviled over the years.

Emmer voted to certify the 2020 election results after Jan. 6, 2021, but signed onto an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to overturn the presidential election results. Trump seemed to acknowledge his role in killing Emmer's quest for the gavel, as he shared on his social media platform an article from Politico about how the former president "torpedoed" the bid. Former President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, his social media site, early Wednesday to urge House Republicans to back Johnson for speaker, less than a day after he effectively derailed Majority Whip Tom Emmer's own bid for the gavel.

Johnson has gained stature and won bipartisan praise for letting the whole House vote on the aid package. He also got strong support in the Senate, where even an outright majority of Republicans voted for the aid on Tuesday. As Rep. Jim Jordan meets with a number of allies in hopes of swaying key holdouts to his speakership bid, GOP sources say his opposition could grow if the votes continue over multiple rounds of ballots. In a letter to colleagues earlier Wednesday, Johnson outlined his first priority will be trying to pass the remaining spending bills that have so far languished in the House one by one. But Johnson indicated that given the time constraints, if those bills can’t pass quickly, he’d look to fund to government using what is known as a short-term spending bill or continuing resolution that would run either through January 15 or April 15, whichever the conference supports.

Fourteen of those Democrats voted on Saturday in favor of aid to Israel, while 12 Democrats who voted to allow the package on the floor on Friday then cast votes against the funding itself. More than seven years later, he is the party’s nominee for speaker after leading the Republican Party to a slim majority in the November midterm elections. He secured the support of most of the conference during a closed-door leadership vote shortly after and overcame a challenge from Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.). If the House speaker election has felt endless to you, take a second to imagine the experiences of the chamber’s reading clerks — the two people who have read out the names of every representative in attendance, and recorded their votes, 13 times now, with a 14th expected Friday night. Also part of the proposal, Republicans familiar with it said, was a commitment by the leader to give the ultraconservative faction approval over a third of the seats on the powerful Rules Committee, which controls what legislation reaches the floor and how it is debated. He also agreed to open government spending bills to a freewheeling debate in which any lawmaker could force votes on proposed changes.

The problem was compounded by the fact that the result of the dispute would determine whether the Whigs or the Democrats held the majority. Neither party agreed to permit a speakership election with the opposite party's delegation participating. Finally, it was agreed to exclude both delegations from the election and a speaker was finally chosen on December 17. John Boehner was elected speaker when the 112th Congress convened on January 5, 2011, and was subsequently re-elected twice, at the start of the 113th and 114th Congresses. In 1989 Speaker Jim Wright of Texas resigned under pressure following revelations about a book deal the House Ethics Committee saw as circumventing fundraising rules. Longworth's successor, John "Cactus Jack" Garner of Texas, left the office after just over a year to be Franklin Roosevelt's first vice president.

The House passed a long-stalled foreign aid package on Saturday that gives funding to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, with a majority of lawmakers backing money for American allies across the globe. But this time around several Democrats have indicated they would cross the aisle to support Johnson and frustrate Greene & Co. if it came to a vote. Democratic leaders have indicated they are open to this, and it essentially repeats the strategy that allowed Johnson to pass the Ukraine portion of the aid bill earlier this month. Passing each bill, in votes expected Saturday, will require Johnson to form complicated bipartisan coalitions on each, with Democrats for example ensuring Ukraine aid is approved, but some left-leaning progressives refusing to back military aid for Israel over the destruction of Gaza. Still, Jeffries said that a majority of Democrats would vote Saturday for the packages of aid for Ukraine, Israel and allies in Asia.

GOP lawmakers who withheld their support for Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio during his three rounds of voting on the House floor are beginning to line up behind Johnson. Johnson now faces a daunting list of challenges, with a fast-approaching government shutdown chief among them. The House is staring down a deadline of Nov. 17, when current government funding expires. In his blueprint for the next few months, Johnson said a stopgap measure extending funding until January or April may be needed to approve more spending and avoid a shutdown. The House has been in a state of uncertainty and chaos since Oct. 3, when rebels forced a vote to oust Mr. McCarthy as speaker. Eight Republicans backed that move along with Democrats, who remained united behind their own leader, Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York.

Live updates: Rep Mike Johnson of Louisiana elected speaker of the House

house of representatives speaker

From early in its existence, the speaker's primary function had been to keep order and enforce rules. Furthermore, when no candidate received an Electoral College majority in the 1824 presidential election, causing the president to be elected by the House, Speaker Clay threw his support to John Quincy Adams instead of Andrew Jackson, thereby ensuring Adams' victory. Following Clay's retirement in 1825, the power of the speakership once again began to decline, despite speakership elections becoming increasingly bitter.

Johnson said after the vote that while it wasn’t “perfect legislation,” it was the “best possible product” Republicans can get given their thin majority in one chamber of Congress. After one GOP lawmaker resigns from the lower chamber this Friday, Republicans will have just a one-vote margin on party lines in the House. That means Greene and Massie alone could oust Johnson if all Democrats join them to remove the speaker as they did last year.

How Different Factions Voted

Washington — Rep. Mike Johnson, a Republican of Louisiana, won election as the new speaker of the House on Wednesday, ending three weeks of chaos since Rep. Kevin McCarthy's historic ouster. An earlier version of this article misstated the number of votes Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana received in House Republicans’ internal election to choose a speaker nominee. On the eve of the Jan. 6 votes, Mr. Johnson had honed his arguments undermining the election to be more palatable. He presented colleagues with arguments they could use to oppose the will of the voters without embracing conspiracy theories and the lies of widespread fraud pushed by Mr. Trump.

Rep. Jim Jordan’s flailing speakership bid has exposed fault lines in House GOP leadership

Mr. Johnson instead faulted the way some states had changed voting procedures during the pandemic, saying it was unconstitutional. “We are unified and so proud to have elected Mike Johnson as speaker of the People’s House,” Elise Stefanik says to kick off a news conference on the Capitol steps. Democrats were scathing in their assessment of Mr. Johnson’s ascent to the speakership. Representative Pete Aguilar of California, the Democratic conference chairman, said that the speaker fight had devolved into a contest over “who can appease Donald Trump.” At that line, a handful of hard-right Republicans stood and applauded. The relationship fissured after Jan. 6, 2021, when pro-Trump rioters attacked the Capitol stoked by lies of a stolen election, and Mr. McCarthy delivered a speech on the House floor condemning Mr. Trump’s role. “You have this moment in time where McCarthy wants it so badly and has just been raked over the coals for an awesome four days,” exulted Russ Vought, the president of the right-wing Center for Renewing America, as he listed the concessions the Republican leader had offered.

‘How the hell does that even happen?’ McCarthy exits Congress amid confusion over who can run to replace him

The House is expected to vote on a resolution in support of Israel on Wednesday afternoon, according to a notice from the House Democratic whip. House Speaker Mike Johnson entered the speaker's office for the first time after being sworn in, with his new name plate hanging above the door. House conservatives are signaling they’ll give the newly minted House Speaker Mike Johnson some runway and flexibility as the House barrels toward a November 17 spending deadline to fund the government.

Let the voting begin

We’re seeing a little bit of that here, with his gracious words toward Jeffries, promising to work together and find common ground. Mr. Johnson immediately faces a host of challenges that dogged his predecessor, Mr. McCarthy. He is confronting a mid-November deadline to pass a measure to fund the government to avert a shutdown. And he will need to lead a conference deeply divided over foreign policy as Congress considers the Biden administration’s $105 billion funding request for Israel, Ukraine and the southern border. Mr. Roy, an initial holdout against Mr. McCarthy, led negotiations to try to bring about a deal that would make Mr. McCarthy the speaker in exchange for changes to House rules.

As Johnson made his way from his House office to the floor, he told CBS News that he "feels very good" about the vote and believes he can secure the necessary 217 votes on the first round. If all 221 Republicans and 212 Democrats mark themselves present, Johnson will need 217 votes to win the gavel. Two seats are vacant due to the resignations of Reps. Chris Stewart, a Republican from Utah, and David Cicilline, a Democrat from Rhode Island. But last month, he voted for a Rep. Matt Gaetz amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would have cut off all security assistance for Ukraine. That amendment failed, , with a majority of Republicans voting against the amendment. "Today is the day that House Republicans will humbly look in our hearts and elect Mike Johnson as speaker of the People's House," she said.

In other words, the Republican firebrands, who think the worst sin imaginable is to work with Democrats, voted with Democrats to oust their leader. Prior to the GOP's 40-year sentence as the minority party, several of its speakers had risen to the top rung largely on their personal popularity among their colleagues. One was Joseph Martin of Massachusetts, who led the party in the House during two brief interludes of majority status after World War II. Both lasted only the minimum two years, the first ending with Democratic Harry S. Truman's surprise White House win in 1948. Martin was back four years later when Eisenhower was first elected president in 1952, but that tour at the top was cut short by his party's sharp losses two years later.

Hastert was speaker through the last two Clinton years and first six of the George W. Bush presidency. But he voluntarily resigned after the GOP lost badly in the 2006 midterms, a defeat Bush called "a thumpin' " at the time. Greene had vowed to press her challenge after Johnson announced a strategy to pass $95 billion in aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan earlier this month. About two-thirds of that money was for Ukraine, an issue Greene had called her "red line" for moving against the speaker. Just such a "motion to vacate the chair" was filed against Johnson in March by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga. But Greene has yet to make the motion "privileged," which under the rules would necessitate a vote within two days.

Any candidate for speaker can lose only a handful of votes and still win the speakership because Republicans hold such a small majority in the House. While Republicans are celebrating finally electing a speaker, across the Capitol, Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the majority leader, chimes in with a reminder of the impending mid-November government shutdown looming unless Congress can pass legislation to keep it funded. “I look forward to meeting with Speaker Johnson soon to discuss the path forward to avoid a government shutdown,” Mr. Schumer said in a statement.

Design Step 1: Identify the Need Activity

steps of the engineering design process

After this initial stage, however, design engineers have idea-specific discussions to sift out poor ideas and direct their focus on concepts worth exploring further. It is an important phase in the engineering design process as low potential ideas are filtered out and the team gains clarity and direction regarding their approach. The engineering design process is a complex, multi-step methodology that demands a well-rounded skill set, including technical acumen, problem-solving ability, and effective communication. While the process can be challenging, a structured approach can simplify complex problems and lead to innovative, efficient solutions. Mastery of the engineering design process is attainable through a combination of educational resources, hands-on experience, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Product DesignProduct design is the general process of creation of new products and services. Table 4 provides examples of how the activity can be altered for different age groups and abilities. Examples of different materials, set up of activity and examples of student work along with the year group that conducted the activity is presented. Engineering design is a growing field with a lot of scope for young professionals. It is constantly evolving and absorbing related disciplines into its large body of knowledge, underpinning the fact that design engineers need to stay up to date with contemporary technology to stay competitive. Finally, the production team packages the products and delivers them to the supply chain department.

Testing and evaluation allows you to see where any improvements are needed. Module 3 focuses on mastering design tools and techniques, covering CAD software, prototyping and simulation basics, and materials selection in design. Students learn how to send signals (such as from buttons or sensors) from one system to another using XBee radio communication modules.

Asking critical questions is a fundamental step in engineering design. In this process, we will try to get as much information as possible. This information will help us define and understand the problem we are dealing with. If we don’t define the problem, it will lead to a failed design that won’t work and will only delay the project.

Having discovered Engineering unexpectedly at a university open day while at an all-girls high school, she decided to pursue it. Having never been made aware by guidance councillors or student advisors that Engineering was even an option, she has a specific interest in promoting STEM careers to women. She is a Mechanical Engineer and an avid STEM ambassador and advocate of engineering outreach within schools, after originally leaving school with no understanding of engineering. This has motivated her to ensure other pupils in the UK have a greater appreciation of engineering earlier in their education. There are a number of key learning objectives/goals that have been identified during the creation of this activity.

Research: Homework time

The first engineering design process step is to identify and define the problem. During the definition of a problem, the team considers the constraints such as available knowledge, finance, and resources. It’s important to note that engineers don’t always follow these engineering design process steps in order. Often, they may backtrack to a previous step during the process to make a design change.

Students follow the steps of the engineering design process to design an improved smartphone case. As if they are materials engineers, they evaluate how to build a smartphone case and study physical properties, chemical properties, and tessellations. Students are challenged to design and build rockets from two-liter plastic soda bottles that travel as far and straight as possible or stay aloft as long as possible. Guided by the steps of the engineering design process, students first watch a video that shows rocket launch failures and then partic... Students follow the steps of the engineering design process to create their own ear trumpet devices (used before modern-day hearing aids), including testing them with a set of reproducible sounds. Students are asked to design a hockey stick for a school’s new sled hockey team.

The next step is to test and evaluate prototypes as per product specifications and their functional & standard requirements. The engineering team starts work on the detailed design of the selected solution. During this phase, the engineering team develops each block of the solution and analyzes the solution in detail.

You may wish to consider further solutions to compare the potential outcomes and find the best approach. This will involve repeating some of the earlier steps for each viable idea. A general interest in engineering and design, along with a basic understanding of mathematics and science. Students are challenged to design and program Arduino-controlled robots that behave like simple versions of the automated guided vehicles engineers design for real-world applications.

They are introduced to the engineering design process and learn of several famous historical figures who contributed to plow design. Often it is made with different materials than the final version, and generally it is not as polished. Prototypes are a key step in the development of a final solution, allowing the designer to test how the solution will work. The interactive diagram below may help you understand the engineering design process, and how it is applied to an experiment or project.

Through rigorous testing, you’ll understand the strengths and weaknesses of your work. Elon Musk himself admits to spending most of his time concerned with problems and their potential solutions. Before you can begin to work on anything tangible, you need to fully understand the nature of the problem and how it will be addressed.
